The commercial shows these young lads watching football together on a Saturday. One of them is phoning up his boss to say he’s got a terribly sore
throat, can’t really speak so can’t go to the team building course that he’s actually supposed to be on.
“He gets out of it and is looking very pleased with himself when the phone rings. He answers it in his nor- mal voice, but it’s the boss phoning back. Thinking on his feet, he pre- tends that his voice is an answer- phone message, and he holds the phone up to the microwave to make the ‘speak after the tone’ noise. It’s not so much of a big visual spectacu- lar, more a slice of life thing.
“I used the 250 daylight stock which proved ideal. We shot in a real
flat in Hackney, which is something that I prefer to do especially if you know you’re going to see out of the windows. It’s much easier to do it for real than to try and cheat that in a stu- dio. But because it was so small with very wide shots, there were very few places to light from; we had to rely on light sources coming from outside most of the time.
“It was a one day shoot and we had to be pretty organised. We had to go in knowing that we’d done our recce to find out things like the direc- tion that the sun’s going to come through at which time of day. At the same time, you have to give the direc- tor enough freedom to do more or less what he wants. And making it look nat- ural is not just a question of doing nothing to it at all.
I use filters for a bit of tone, and work as closely as I can with the TK guy. It can be tricky, especially in such a small space, because there’s a fine line between looking really rough and natural. But making it
look natural is really a ques-
tion of doing enough, subtly,
so that it looks like you
haven’t done anything.” ■
