  opportunity to try something I don’t usually do with a DP who enjoys that kind of perspective’. So I kind of worked to a much higher f-stop than I usually do and didn’t really underexpose.
“You know, in some ways we’ve reached a certain perfec- tion with our technology so perhaps the only way of creating something new is by pushing
the boundaries of those so-called ‘perfect’ things, by somehow making them in a way imperfect. Bleach bypass is one of those ways. You get grain, darkness, contrast de-saturation and defi- nitely not reality. It’s almost like trying to get back to black-and- white in any way one can.”
Zambarloukos has also been trying to push those boundaries in both his commercials and music videos, the latter – for artists like Vincent Stormfield, Nicole Russo, The Music, Goldrush and Simian - involving the use of 3-perf cameras and high ASA Fuji stock.
“The trick,” said Zambarloukos, “is always to try and maintain that student attitude. You must always be prepared to learn, be prepared to test, to experiment, to try things out. But you have to know the rules first to break them.” ■ QUENTIN FALK
