Hot on the heels of his well deserved British Film Academy Award for The Wings Of The Dove, we talk to dis- tinguished cinematographer EDUARDO SERRA about his acclaimed work on the film and a career which has taken the Portuguese-born DP all over the world. Nearer home SUE GIBSON, first woman member of the BSC, explains how she was eventually ‘seduced by the moving image’ after first toying with stills photography. Our third cam- eraman in this issue is the legendary cameraman FREDDIE YOUNG who, at 95, looks back over an astonishingly successful career which earned him no less than three Hollywood Oscars.
After nearly 15 years on primetime TV, it’s easy to take ITV’s The Bill for granted. We find out just what makes this remarkable, long-running sin- gle-camera drama series tick. Even longer on the stocks is TRANSWORLD INTERNATIONAL, part of the giant IMG Group, which is this year celebrating 25 years of providing innovative small-screen sports coverage. TWI currently dispenses over 3,000 hours a year to broadcasters but head of produc- tion Bill Sinrich says we ain’t seen nothing yet.
The fascinating tale of what goes on beyond even those distant transmitting satellites is told in
the BBC’s new landmark series The Planets which will combine all kinds of technology to bring us the vivid tale of our’s and possibly alien solar sys- tem. With his feet firmly on the ground is young writer-director JUSTIN KERRIGAN, past winner of the DM Davies Award and former Fujifilm Scholarship nominee, who reveals the agony and the ecstasy behind bringing his music-pounding first feature Human Traffic to the big screen.
Our special USA supplement puts the focus firmly on two top-rated American network TV shows, Ally McBeal and The Practice (soon to be on their way to the UK courtesy of C4), as seen through the eyes of their veteran AFC cinematog- raphers, BILLY DICKSON and DENNIS SMITH.
For years, PINEWOOD has proved a home from home for American producers and in the first of a series on British studios, we lift the lid on the Buckinghamshire facility which has spawned so many great international movies over the past seven decades. Hoping to nurture more produc- tions this side of the Atlantic is the new trio of Lottery funded film franchises. Our three part investigation of these ‘mini conglomerates’ begins with THE FILM CONSORTIUM. Plus MIKE NICHOLS the movie actor, UTE LEMPer and STUART ST PAUL in a Wedding Dress! That’s EXPOSURE No. 5 ■
