 FUJIFILM AT CANNES
Congratulations to all this year’s winners and nominees for Best Cinematography at the 70th Oscars in Hollywood and the 50th Anniversary BAFTA awards in London.
In Los Angeles, Russell Carpenter (Titanic) finally closed out Dante Spinotti (LA Confidential), Eduardo Serra (The Wings Of The Dove), Roger Deakins (Kundun) and Janusz Kaminski (Amistad). However, back in London a month
later, Serra turned the tables by winning the BAFTA award ahead of Carpenter, Spinotti and Donald M. McAlpine (William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet).
Veteran camera operator Mike Roberts (profiled in EXPOSURE NO.1 last year) was given the prestigious Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding Achievement in British Cinema for his work on films like The Killing Fields, The Mission, Michael Collins and Evita. ■
Wildscreen, the world’s biggest festival of moving images from the natural world, returns to Bristol from October 10-16 with, once again, Fujifilm as one of its principal sponsors.
This ninth in a biennial series, which began in 1982, is held in associa- tion with WWF-UK and is open to everyone involved in the making, distri- bution and / or transmission of film, TV and interactive media productions on wildlife or environmental themes.
Judging of the Wildscreen Panda Awards, takes places during festival week and prizes include the Fujifilm award for cinematography. There’s also an extensive programme of screenings, training events, seminars, debates, exhibitions and socials plus the Peter Scott Lecture.
Look out too for a new photog- raphy competition being run in con- junction with Wildscreen 98. The contest is open to everyone involved in the wildlife film-making industry and takes the theme This Wild Life Of Ours. Photos may feature any aspect of the production process - be it the boredom or excitement of life on location, the humour or haz- ards of encounters with wildlife, or scenes (fit for family viewing) from the edit suite or studio.
The winning entrant will receive £250 cash from the BBC’s Wildlife magazine, 25 rolls of Fujichrome Astia and have his/her shot pub- lished in the October 98 issue. There is expected to be an exhibition of all the best entries during the festival. Entries need to be 35mm tranparen- cies and the deadline for receipt is July 31. All details from the Festival Office at 0117 909 6300. ■
