The Orange British Academy Film Awards Nominations 2001
The Lord Of The Rings, with its Middle-Earth re-created in New Zealand, and Moulin Rouge, whose period Paris was forever Fox Studios Australia, tied for most BAFTA film nominations this year with twelve each.
In third place were jointly Amélie and Gosford Park with nine each, followed by Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (seven) with Iris and the animated musical-comedy Shrek receiving six each.
A Beautiful Mind earned five, including one for Russell Crowe who was nominated in the same Best Actor category last year for Gladiator.
There’s a ‘two chances’ motif this year with Judi Dench in Lead and Supporting lists for Iris and The Shipping News along with her Iris co-star Jim Broadbent who also gets the nod for Moulin Rouge. Gosford Park screenwriter Julian Fellowes is in the running for Original Screenplay and The Carl Foreman Award.
Gosford Park actresses Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren are pitted against each other while the film’s director, Robert Altman, and designer, Stephen Altman, are poised for a unique father-and- son double. Quentin Falk
