DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT CONTINUED
Although on the face of it there is a high physical and emotional comic charge to my film, there is an underlying theme of people coping with loss that roots the story in a hard emotional truth.
The narrative has a strong theme of ‘be careful what you wish for’ a wish fulfillment fantasy showing the real consequences when your dreams come true. Everything has a price. Ruth achieves her social climbing but loses her husband in the process, discovering for the first time in her life that she does feel love for him.
Charles’s ex wife Elvira gets everything she wants but loses her man by becoming a victim of her own deviousness.
Charles gets his women and his career but loses his mind, ending up at one point in a straight jacket in hospital.
Only Madame Arcati, the most eccentric of all of them, achieves happiness without condition as she is finally reunited with her lost young husband.
Her séances reincarnate him leaving us with the enduring image of a young soldier and an old woman walking peacefully away from the camera into a sunset which melts into the sea. Loss is forever - but there are ways of coping.
