THE STORY
Charles Condomine is a celebrity novelist with writer’s block.
He invites a local amateur spiritualist Madame Arcarti, to hold a séance in the hope of inspiration for his next best- selling book. He gets his wishes in the firebrand return of his dead wife Elvira who wreaks supernatural havoc with his sanity and his current wife Ruth.
When we first meet Charles, he is at his wits end, creatively blocked and drinking too hard. His socialite wife Ruth, a perfect study of chic elegance and outward sang froid, pressures him endlessly about producing his next bestseller.
In a desperate attempt for inspiration, Charles invites Madame Arcati to hold a séance at his house. She does, but in- advertently brings his dead wife Elvira back to haunt him. Only Charles can see Elvira, leading to violent complica- tions in his marriage.
