or Ben Smithard, getting the chance to shoot The Damned FUnited – expected to be one of the UK’s big films of next
year – was like landing his own “pet project”. Based on David Peace’s acclaimed 2006 bestseller, it’s a fictionalised account of legendary football manager Brian Clough’s
turbulent 44-day reign at the helm of Leeds United in 1974. “I read it when it first came out,” recalls Smithard, “and I
thought it was one of the best books about sport, ever. As soon as I heard they were making a film, it was all I wanted to do. It then took me six months to get a meeting with the director.”
