Sir Michael Caine, a nominee for Best Actor, presented their awards and was just one of a star- ry line-up – some others also nomi- nees – on hand to pass out prizes.
Other presenters included Tim Robbins, Lord Attenborough, Mena Suvari, Jim Broadbent, Martin Scorsese, Natascha McElhone, Renee Zellweger, Sir Ian McKellen, Jennifer Connelly, Angelina Jolie, Sean Bean, Julianne Moore, Gael Garcia Bernal, Rachel Weisz, Paul Bettany, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Maureen Lipman and Joely Richardson.
Meryl Streep, a double nomi- nee, didn’t present but was a hilariously funny recipient of Adapted Screenplay on behalf
of, appropriately enough, Adaptation authors Charlie Kaufman and his fictional brother, Donald, who couldn’t attend.
The final two presenters of the evening were Kristin Scott Thomas and Michael Douglas, both some- time collaborators with venerable American producer Saul Zaentz who was awarded the Academy Fellowship.
Introducing Zaentz, a previous BAFTA winner for One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and The English Patient, Douglas described him as a man who has “never been frightened to fail.” For Zaentz, 82 years young, who claimed he “grew up with sense of adventure making films,” that adventure still continues.
