THE DP VIEW
Given that the majority of the film takes place on the fiction- alised island of Sinmouth (with a 40s feel) suffering under the curse of the Bounder, we needed a specific and different look for doom and gloom.
Two solutions – bleach by-pass and digitising the whole film (as, recently, in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Sorted) were not options for the film financially, although I did get a test kindly digitised by Cinesite LA.
So, liking the tones possible at the dark end of the scale in the Fuji 500 and wanting to keep the look consis- tent on both interiors and exteriors,
I tested a number of full colour filters with this stock with Clive Noakes at DeLuxe and settled for ‘Storm 1’, a subtle blue/grey/green filter which worked extremely well without too much stop loss.
It gave the right amount of de-saturation, and the islands and inhabitants a cool, unhealthy look. It knocked out the warm tones, de-saturated generally and highlighted the reds exclusively by pushing them towards a purple/red. I used it throughout these scenes on both the Fuji 500 and the Fuji 250D.” ■
