the high profile press night of Kenneth Branagh’s recently acclaimed play, The Play What I Wrote at Liverpool’s newly refur- bished Playhouse Theatre. Liverpool actor and BAFTA North supporter Mickey Starke was the surprise celebrity guest.
The audience warmly responded to the delightful performance and Branagh informed Sinclair that he was delighted with the turnout and audience’s response.
BAFTA North in collaboration with First Take a Liverpool com- munity arts organisa- tion held a screening of BELTANE, a showcase produced by First Take’s ‘untitled’ scratch to screen pro-

As well as attending the high profile opening of Mustard, Liverpool’s latest restaurant and wine bar, members of BAFTA North and its sponsors were delighted to attend this year’s highly successful BAFTA Interactive Awards Ceremony. BAFTA Cymru looks forward to the coming months with a new committee in place, a new member in Gary Howe (of Gary Howe Casting) and a new Director in Geraint Evans who was appoint- ed on November 1. Until recently, Evans was Head of Entertainment at BBC Wales and has over 19 years experi- ence in the broadcast- ing industry.
Early indications suggest an increase in membership although existing and potential applicants are urged to enrol as soon as possible.
Forthcoming events include participation at the
International Film Festival of Wales in Cardiff, a Premiere of CrossCurrent (Byw yn Dy Groen), a film produced by BODA for S4C and also in con-
junction with S4C a special screening of Teliesyn’s new film Eldra at Theatr Gwynedd,
Bangor.
In early
December BAFTA Cymru was due to hold a special trib- ute night for David Meredith, a man who in a long and distinguished career has served the film and televi-
sion industry with great style in Wales and around the world. ■ Sarah Howells
As part of the successful collaboration between BAFTA Scotland and the recently formed Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) we took the lat- est Scottish produced film – Late Night Shopping - to Dublin for a special screening.
The young director of the film, Saul Metzstein, and produc- er Angus Lamont were on hand to give the Irish Academy audi- ence some entertaining back- ground to the making of the film, both in London and in Scotland’s famous seaside town of Saltcoates!
The new Chairman of the all- Ireland Academy, Northern Irish producer Ian Kennedy
and IFTA’s Chief
Executive Fionnuala Sweeney greatly enjoyed the screening and we are already planning our next exchange event to take place in the spring of 2002 in Scotland.
Latest feature film
news from Scotland: the
long awaited premiere of Strictly Sinatra was very
well received by an enthusiastic Glasgow audience. Written and directed by our Oscar-winning Scottish ‘local hero’ Peter Capaldi, the film features a ter- rific lead performance by the brilliant Ian Hart and great sup- porting roles played by Brian
Cox and Alun Armstrong. Supported by BAFTA
Scotland, Glasgow’s Short Film Factory will give its first public screening to their innovative “Eight-
and-a-Half” scheme at the brand new UGC flagship cinema in Glasgow. Once again we are able to offer our members the oppor- tunity to see some of the first and best new work from young Scottish Writers, directors and producers.
Plans are already in place for another animation event for Scotland and BAFTA Scotland has contributed considerable expertise towards the organisa- tion of PROJECTOR, a full day of animation masterclasses and screenings taking place in the newly opened Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow.
With early preview screen- ings of Charlotte Gray both in
Edinburgh and in Glasgow, we are delighted to welcome pro- ducer Douglas Rae of Ecosse Films and screen writer Jeremy Brock, to attend Q and A ses- sions in both cities.
