CALLING ALL
MEMBERS FROM AMY MINYARD BAFTA Events And Membership Officer
DEPUTY CHAIR OF EVENTS ELECTED
At the meeting of the Events and Education Committee on October 16, TV writer/producer Amma Asante was duly elected to serve as Deputy Chair of Events and Education. Amma will now be co-opted on to the Council of Management.
This appointment was nec- essary as the workload for events is considerable. Amma has been tireless in her work for the events committee and BAFTA over the past year, pro- ducing the hugely successful Funding the Feature event and helping to make the Networking evenings so popu- lar and well attended.
EXHIBIT CHANGE
You will have noticed that we have a new poster and stills
exhibition in our Members’ Bar areas. The theme of this exhibition is British Comedy in Film and Television and it was a project that was put together by Charlie North Lewis (our general manager) and the BFI in conjunction with Simon Relph and Sir Sydney Samuelson.
Owing to the huge amount of material to choose from as well as the vastness of the pro- ject itself, we obviously need another exhibition on the same subject to cover some of those films and TV shows that didn’t make it into this one.
Future planned exhibitions are: Crime in British Film and Television and British Film and Television Thrillers in addition to more displays of set and cos- tume design by BAFTA winners.

SPOTLIGHT ON
EVENTS
October and November were exciting months. We held a Film Networking Evening during the week of the London Screenings, with our Children’s Film and Television Networking Evening following in November, with many of the nominees in attendance.
In October we also heard from Ruth Caleb, Chris Collins, Liz Rosenthal and Dominic Savage in an evening chaired by Hilary Bevan Jones about how to make award winning dramas for television for less than £350,000. With drama budgets being slashed as ad revenues continue to fall, this evening showed programme makers that quality dramas could still be made at a price.
Director Geoffrey Sax and writer Andrew Davies spoke to a packed house after a screening of their contemporary adaptation of Othello. Eamonn Walker and Christopher Eccleston
star in this chilling and
powerful film set in the
seething world of police corruption and institu-
tional racism. Davies
brings Shakespeare’s
classic tale of jealousy,
love, and obsession into
the new millennium,
making it relevant to a
modern society. If you
weren’t fortunate enough to see it at the Academy, make sure you catch it when broadcast on ITV this winter.
In November we took part in the London Film Festival with the Script Factory to bring you a screening of Gosford Park with Robert Altman, Julian Fellowes, and Stephen Fry in conversation after the film.
Controller of CBBC Nigel Pickard spoke to BAFTA mem- bers about his plans for the BBC’s digital kids channels, and we saw some impressive short films at the Kodak Short Film Showcase.
THE BRITISH ACADEMY OF FILM AND TELEVISION ARTS HONOURS JACK CARDIFF AND GUY GREEN
Two great British cinematogra- phers, Jack Cardiff and Guy Green, were honoured
with a BAFTA Special Awards in separate cere- monies this year.
Presenting 87-year-
old Cardiff with his award
on July 31 in the wake of
his Life Achievement
Oscar, BAFTA chairman
Simon Relph said: “It
seemed to me that we had been somewhat remiss
here in London not having taken note of his extraordinary career in films as a director and as a cinematographer.”
This particular evening was intended to put that right. “Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen... and film people,” Cardiff began, “I am really and
truly completely overwhelmed. I didn’t realise that there is such a warmth and friendship and feeling about it all. “
Cardiff’s big break behind the camera came in 1943 whilst working as a camera operator on Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Powell was so impressed by his talent that he invited Cardiff to be the cinematographer on A Matter of Life and Death.
He then went on to be DP on more than 70 films, including The African Queen, The Barefoot Contessa, Black Narcissus (for which he was awarded the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Cinematography), The Red Shoes, The Prince And The Showgirl, War And Peace (an Oscar nomination), Death On
The Nile and The Far Pavilions (a BAFTA nomination).
As well as being a great cin- ematographer, Cardiff is also a noted director. He won a Golden Globe for Best Director and an Oscar nomination for Sons And Lovers and directed stars such as Trevor Howard in The Lion, Alain Delon in Girl On A Motorcycle and Shirley Maclaine in My Geisha.
Like Cardiff, a fine and even more prolific director, Guy Green, 88, was presented with his Special Award on October 9.
The guests who attended the dinner, held at Piccadilly, included Lord Attenborough, Sir Anthony Havelock-Allan, Bryan Forbes, Lewis Gilbert, Sir Derek Jacobi, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Sydney Samuelson, Freddie Francis, Oswald Morris and Sir John Mills.
