SPECIAL AWARDS Edward Mansell
The Natural History Unit
The great and good from the world ‘behind the camera’ were joined by presenters from the worlds of television, film and music, including Claire Goose, Kate Adie, Stephen Frears, Tara Fitzgerald, Richard Curtis, Sir Bob Geldof and Peter Snow.
Among those honoured were BBC’s Natural History Unit and editor Edward Mansell, who were both given Special Awards, in the Gift of the Academy.
The NHU was founded in 1957 and began with such pro- grammes as Look under the direction of the late Sir Peter Scott. Since its inception, the NHU, dedicated to exploring the wondrous world of flora and fauna, has a roll-call ranging from Animal Magic and The World About Us through to the recent block-busting subterranean series, The Blue Planet.
Keith Scholey accepted the award for the NHU, which was presented by zoologist – and NHU alumnus – Dr Charlotte Uhlenbroek of gorilla-nudging Cousins fame.
Eddie Mansell has worked for Granada Television as an editor since 1978, during which time he has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA for Prime Suspect, and been nominated for many more.
His work includes some of the best of British drama, including The Jewel In The Crown, Sherlock Holmes, Moll Flanders, Cracker, and The Jury. Mansell was pre- sented with his award by director Roy Battersby.
Other multiple winners includ- ed The Blue Planet, which won Original Television Music for previous BAFTA winner George Fenton and Photography Factual. BBC1’s The Way We Live Now added to the Drama Serial BAFTA it won at the Television Awards by winning in two cate- gories – Make Up & Hair Design and Production Design. Othello, from ITV1, took home two awards; for Editing Fiction/ Entertainment and Photography Fiction/Entertainment.
The most moving moment came with the posthumous award to former railwayman Rob Dawber who was named New Writer for The Navigators. His BAFTA was collected by his father and brother.
The sumptuous backdrop of the Savoy was a perfect setting for a ceremony to honour those who bring television programmes to life. Special thanks must go to Hilary Bevan-Jones, Chair of the TV Craft Committee, Craft Officer Lisa Prime, Producer Claire Brown and Craft Awards Assistant Kelly Smith, without whose tireless work this event would never have been realised.
BAFTA would also like to thank all those companies who spon- sored categories. They were: AKA Pictures, Allders, Bentley Productions, the British Studio Alliance, Columbia Tristar International Television, Kodak Entertainment Imaging, Oasis Television and Sebastian McLean International. Tara Davies
