Iwalked nonchalantly up to the stage of the Cardiff International Arena thinking desperately of something witty and sincere to say in my accept- ance speech. Waiting to do the honours were Neil and Glenys Kinnock, the Heads of HTV S4C and BBC Wales, actors Charles Dale and Rakie Ayola and Breakfast News’ Sian Williams. Good turn out I thought, and just as I was about to utter some timeless gems, a voice boomed from the wings, “Geraint get off, we’d like to walk this through just one more time.”
It was, of course, the after- noon rehearsal for the real thing in the evening – the closest I will ever get I suppose to winning, although in another life I had been nominated three times!!!
Months of preparation in com- pany with colleagues Sarah and Lisa were now coming to an end. Our main sponsor, Barcud Derwen had been its usual gener- ous self as had other sponsors – hundreds of tapes had been viewed – juries had deliberated – brochures printed – advertisers secured – tables sold – flowers ordered – and, oh yes, the nomi- nees had been invited and the awards were ready.
It was a great occasion, host Huw Edwards was on sparkling form bringing good news to thirty three worthy winners including himself as the Best on screen pre- senter, Lord Attenborough BAFTA’s new President paid a warm tribute to special award winner Jonathan Pryce, and the film Eldra made by Teliesyn for S4C scooped five awards includ- ing Best drama.
Although it was a night that celebrated individual achieve- ment it also reinforced the value of great teamwork as every recipient thanked those who had made the whole thing possible. I would add my thanks to the BAFTA Cymru team – they are a winning combination. Geraint Evans, Director BAFTA Cymru
