After the Academy’s Film Awards, the Television Awards
and the Television Craft Awards, it’s been a busy few weeks.
The red carpet was out at BAFTA over the May Bank Holiday weekend when more than a hundred of the exceptionally talented craftspeople who help to make British television so good
were nominated for Awards. A sparkling televised ceremony paid proper homage to the excellence of their work.
Two weeks later, it was the Production and Performance Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel. Greg Dyke, David Liddiment, Joanna Lumley, Carol Vorderman in an eye-catching body hugging dress - evenLennoxLewis- theywereallthere, thoughAliGhadtobe smuggled in through the back door.
Barbara Windsor presented and received an Award. Caroline Aherne and the rest of the Royle Family collected three. Director Peter Kosminsky, writer Tony Marchant, Michael Gambon, Jeremy Paxman were all honoured. Peter Bazalgette received the Academy’s Fellowship.
The 1400 tickets were sold weeks in advance. The event, televised by LWT, gave ITV a solid 40% audience share for two hours. Sponsors, TV bosses and all of us at BAFTA were delighted. Afterwards, Boy George was the DJ at a raucous disco which went on into the small hours... Who said BAFTA was stuffy?
