There was a great atmos- phere at BAFTA for the recent Television Craft Awards 2000 on April 30. The event kicked off with a champagne reception to get everyone in the party mood, followed by the ceremony hosted by TV presenter Gabby Yorath.
The Academy’s Chairman, Tim Angel OBE, paid tribute to all the nomi- nees. “British television is rightly considered to be the
of your skill and talent is as important as any other disci- pline that we honour.”
The sense of genuine appreciation of behind the camera talent was no more apparent than with the “faces” of the evening. Awards were presented by Robert Dawes, Rosie Marcel, Roy Marsden, EastEnders’ Tamzin Outhwaite, Nathaniel Parker and Neil Pearson. All the presenters were generous with their words and support of their television colleagues.
Clive Owen presented The Special
Award to Make Up, Hair & Visual Effects Designer, Dorka Nieradzik. Clive and Dorka have worked together on three film and television projects - Green Fingers, Split Second and Century - and Clive paid tribute to a woman who is, “not only a top make-up artist but
also a fantastic person.” Televised highlights of the Ceremony were shown
on the Granada network on May 7 and gained an audi- ence of 1.4 million.
BAFTA would like to thank Angels The Costumiers, Arri (GB) Limited, Blue Post Production, Kodak Entertainment Imaging, The London Studios and NATS Post Production for their support of the Television Craft Awards. Lisa Prime, Awards Officer – Children’s and Television Craft
AWARDS 20000
75th Anniversary of the first
best in the world, in no small part because of the vast wealth of talent that exists in this country behind the camera. The responsibili- ty of creating a specific look or illusion, or the painting of an image in the viewers mind of what we see and how we feel is a huge one. All of you produce an out- standing quality of work and the Academy’s recognition
ever TV demonstration.
To mark the occasion, there was an
often enjoyably nostalgic strand to the Radio Times’ sponsored event on May 12 at the Grosvenor House, leading off with a superbly evocative two-minute blink-and-you’ll-miss ‘em montage of classic small-screen moments.
But the icing on the cake had to be the “re-union” of those enduringly glamorous Avengers’ ladies - Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, Linda Thorson and Joanna Lumley – for one of the Academy’s Special Awards. They, in turn, dedicated the prestigious mask to their suave leading man Patrick Macnee, aka John Steed, who sent a filmed message to guests.
Older even than television itself was indefatigable 88-year-old Thora Hird named Best Actress for the sec- ond year running for her work on Lost For Words. More than 25 years her junior but still a comparative veteran, Michael Gambon was Best Actor for Wives & Daughters.
The awards, compered by affable Des Lynam, were well spread among the many nominated programmes with the exception of The Royle Family which bagged the finest kind of pair – Best Situation Comedy and Best
