A ccording to British-born director Stewart Raffill (The
Adventures Of The Wilderness Family): “Like Dead Calm, the very successful Australian
film that introduced Nicole Kidman to the international screen, Three is an intense psychological thriller. Two strong-willed men and an equally inde- pendent woman fight for survival on a desert island where they are forced to survive not only the elements, but also each other.
“In this isolated microcosm we peel away all the layers of civilization from the three principal characters until only their basic instincts of sur- vival and domination prevail. Even the woman in this carnal world reveals her basic instincts as she is forced to join the deadly game.
“Because of these highly charged emotional scenes, it was important to find an actress that was not only beau- tiful, but also very comfortable with her own sensuality. The telling of this story required three very accom- plished actors and great attention to the details of their characters and their dissolution.
“Even the environment plays an important role in the film’s drama. Raging seas, wind, rain, and pounding surf add to the human conflicts. Calm blue lagoons and idyllic days spent on white sand beaches ignite the other human needs and spark fires of con- flict. And as our protagonists dive on colourful life-encrusted reefs, we plunge to the very depths of their psy- ches as they continue to shed their veneer of civilization.”
Veteran British cinematographer Tony Imi BSC found himself back in the Caribbean for the first time since he’d lit a 1990 telemovie version of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man And The Sea.
“Because of the light out there, which is great all day long, I mostly used the Fujicolour Super F-64D 8522. For about 90 per cent of the film, I would guess. It was absolutely beautiful. The flesh tones and the contrast in those lighting conditions were stunning.”
Three, which also shot interiors at Delux Studios in Luxembourg, is cur- rently on general release in the UK. ■
