Minarets of the Sultanahmet Mosque (or Blue Mosque) built between 1609 and 1617 by Mehmet Aga (d. 1622) for Sultan Ahmet i (d. 1617). One of Sinan’s apprentices, Mehmet Aga continued employing many of his master’s ideas. Regarded as the last structure built
in the Ottoman classical style, one of the mosque’s innovative features is its
six pencil-shaped minarets which are tted with balconies that drip with stalactite-like decorative corbels.
Interior section of the Süleymaniye mosque in Istanbul designed and built for Sulayman i between 1548 and 1557 by his chief architect Mimar Sinan (d. 1588), the most celebrated architect of the pre-modern Islamic world. The Süleymaniye includes
a mosque, a Qurʾan school, four madrasas dedicated to the four schools of Sunni Islamic law, a medical school, a hospital, a hospice, a public kitchen, baths, fountains and the mausoleums of Sulayman and his wife. Sinan is also buried here. One of Süleymaniye mosque’s unique architectural features is its use of multiple arches, domes and semi-domes to lower or elevate the ceiling height and bring light into the building.
