EXPOSURE
T his month’s Cover Story celebrates the work and achievements of top natural history producer JOHN DOWNER whose acclaimed epic, Eagles, deservedly won Fujifilm’s Best Cinematography Award at Wildscreen ‘98, also known as Green Hollywood. After covering these soar- ing monarchs of the air, Downer has now moved on to a new BBC series called SuperSense which explores the sensory powers of different animals. And if that wasn’t enough he’s also called action
on Lions, which will be two years in the making. Leading off our trio of behind the camera pro- files is veteran FREDDIE FRANCIS who might have been a perfect candidate for a retrospective if it wasn’t for the fact that this remarkable, double Oscar-winning octogenarian has recently complet- ed yet another frontline feature assignment. During 60 years on the floor Francis, currently President of the BSC, is not only an acknowledged master of both black-and-white and colour cinematography
but was also a prolific director in his own right. Although starting out as a sculptor JOHN DE BORMAN soon switched to movies and is now one of the industry’s most sought after craftsman follow- ing films like The Full Monty, Hideous Kinky and Small Faces. Whereas at 26, ADAM SUSCHITZKY is just beginning a career path with his feature debut Out Of Depth, but he’s following in the great family tra- dition as his father Peter and grandfather Wolfgang
were both acclaimed cinematographers.
Another first-timer is the writer and director MARTIN DUNKERTON who has turned a true life tale
of teenage excess in the sun-soaked Greek islands into his first feature film Brothers. Lending her increasingly experienced and glamourous pres- ence to Scots writer-director David Kane’s debut This Year’s Love, is lovely CATHERINE MCCORMACK. She began her acting career having been famously chosen straight from drama school to play Mel Gibson’s ill-fated wife in Braveheart. Roles in The Land Girls and Dancing At Lughnasa preceded her role in Kane’s bittersweet British comedy.
The third and last focus on our National Lottery franchise holders settles on DNA FILMS run jointly by a pair of Britain’s most successful independent film producers to date, DUNCAN KENWORTHY and ANDREW MACDONALD, responsible for films such as Four Weddings And A Funeral and Trainspotting. With some 16 new films in the pipeline, odds are that some of these might find the perfect host at the re- born and fully refurbished ELSTREE STUDIOS. Prince Charles has just cut the ribbon in Borehamwood on two brand new sound stages and the future of this once troubled complex now looks very bright indeed, according to studio boss NEVILLE REID.
Also featured in this issue is VFG, the United Kingdom’s largest broadcast and film rental com- pany which recently signed up award-winning KARL KELLY as its new Technical Director; INDEX STOCK SHOTS which for 30 years has been a trusted supplier of library footage for moviemakers and ITFC whose versatility in the business is legend, ranging as it does from subtitling to subtle editing.
