Entertainment/HOT Animation’s BOB THE BUILDER, the current kids’ phenomenon and sometime pop chart-topper, now shooting his fifth series for Children’s BBC TV.
Our three Behind The Camera profiles reveal a wealth of experience. ANDREW DUNN BSC won no fewer than three BAFTA awards for BBC dramas like Edge Of Darkness and Tumbledown before turning to the cinema scoring further hits with The Bodyguard and The Madness Of King George. His latest film Liam for director Stephen Frears arrives in UK cinemas later this month. DENIS CROSSAN BSC made his first splash while still at film school shooting the contro- versial Relax pop video for Frankie Goes To Hollywood. More recently he worked with American Beauty star Thora Birch on the British-based suspense drama, The Hole.
Texas-born SEAN BOBBITT arrived late in fea- tures after a distinguished career as a combat news cameraman in war zones like Beirut and on numerous long-form documentaries. He made his cinema debut with Michael Winterbottom’s award-winning Wonderland and has just completed the latest small-screen adap- tation of Nicholas Nickleby, with Gregor Fisher and Charles Dance, which will be aired on ITV at Easter.
Our Flashback features that great camera- man, ERNIE DAY BSC, best known for his collabo- rations with David Lean as the late Freddie Young’s operator on Lawrence Of Arabia, Dr Zhivago and Ryan’s Daughter which all won an Oscar for Best Cinematography.
To the sprawling International University north of London, location for the low-budget thriller DEAD IN THE WATER, from first-time writer-director Merlin Ward. It co-stars Sophie Ward, Sophia Myles and George Asprey. Then to Twickenham Studios where they’re shooting interiors on an ambitious new BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Jane Howard’s sprawling family saga, THE CAZALET CHRONICLE. Produced by a duet of professionals, Verity Lambert and Joanna Lumley, the cast includes Stephen Dillane, Anna Chancellor and Lesley Manville.
This cross-country journey continues with a report on the LIVERPOOL FILM OFFICE which has become as hot-bed of new production, includ- ing 51st State, co-starring Samuel L Jackson and Robert Carlyle. Another top centre for stars is EALING STUDIOS which has had a new lease of life after its takeover a year ago by a consortium including Fragile Films. And talking of stars, the ever busy IAN HART, from Liam and Born Romantic, is our subject in Facing The Camera.
All this, plus a report on DIGITAL CINEMA, a look at the new Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet wartime drama ENIGMA and a series of fascinat- ing first-hand accounts by DPs JOHN WYATT, GEOFF BOYLE and ALESSANDRA SCHERILLO of their recent‘shoots’. Allgoodstuff.■
