Hall – who edged out fellow nomi-
nees John Mathieson (Gladiator), Roger Pratt (The End Of The Affair), Robert Richardson (Snow Falling On Cedars), Emmanuel Lubezki (Sleepy Hollow) and Oliver Stapleton (The Cider House Rules ) - was unable to be present at the BSC’s annual Operators’ Night held at Pinewood in December.
The BSC’s Bert Easey Award went posthumously to Charles D Staffell, a giant in visual effects, who died last year. It was received from guest-of- honour, director Chris Columbus, by Staffell’s long time aide and friend, Carole Kenyon.
The first of the GBCT Awards, The David Lenham Award, was anoth- er posthumous presentation collected by his long-time grip Colin Manning on behalf of operator Mike Roberts who died suddenly last year aged 60. The Focus Puller’s Award went to Mike Evans, long-time collaborator of GBCT chairman Harvey Harrison, while Peter Taylor picked up the Operator’s Award.
A popular winner of Arri’s John Alcott Memorial Award was the BSC’s hardworking secretary Frances Russell.
The evening enjoyed a record turnout of 220 and also paid tribute to various home-grown cinematogra- phers like Billy Williams, Freddie Francis, John De Borman, Gavin Finney, Fred Tammes, John Mathieson,
