      AN INTERVIEW WITH
KATE STARK
E
helped them achieve their break. For Kate Stark, this opening came before she’d
“even beheld a motion picture camera, whilst working as a bar maid at the Duke’s Head
in Putney.
“I’d done photography at
school and got quite fascinated with cinematography. The old film noir look was probably the
thing that had attracted me to the idea of how lighting really affects the mood of the film.
Tim Maurice-Jones used to drink in my local pub and I asked him
questions about film stocks and cameras every time he came in. Eventually, I think
I pestered him into giving me my first job.”
Stark then took the practical step of joining Cameras
Ltd. at Westway Studios where she learned to strip down cameras and “drive big vans” with equal relish. Thus armed, she
returned to assisting. Two features followed, Riff-Raff and Hardware, where then-operator Maurice-Jones once again picked up his protégée and
very successful industry technician can usually trace their career back to one or two key figures that
introduced her to the DP Steven Chivers.
