fayre in the square
Some months ago, Councillor Robert Davis contacted BAFTA trustee, Sir Sydney Samuelson, to ask if the Academy would contribute to the City of Westminster’s celebra- tion of HM The Queen’s Golden Jubilee by helping to present a major event in Berkeley Square.
The Academy was delighted to assist and handed the project to Charlie North Lewis to organ- ise. From Elstree Studios, Sir Sydney was able to secure the support of Dennis Fraser MBE of Chapman Cranes and Joe Dunton MBE of JDC Cameras who jointly provided a camera crane, remote control camera and big screen monitor to allow the public to operate a real movie camera mounted 30 feet in the air.
The Academy was also very fortunate in persuading Julia Cruttenden and Rhian Meakin, of The Greasepaint School of Stage,
TV & Film Make-up, to set up a fully operational make-up studio.
Charlie North Lewis was able to arrange for one of the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars to be on display and some exciting advance publicity for the next James Bond film Die Another Day. There was a video presenta- tion of past BAFTA awards cere- monies and a display of star cos- tumes kindly donated by Tim Angel OBE.
The event lasted for three days and was attended by more than 30,000 people. With so many attractions catering for every age group, a stunning time was had by all members of the visiting throng.
