CALLING ALL
MEMBERS FROM AMY MINYARD BAFTA Events And Membership Officer
The autumn certainly started with a flourish. With seven events at the Academy in September, not to mention the star studded screenings we have been fortunate to host, 195 Piccadilly has certainly been the place to be. Paul Bettany came in to meet members after a screening of A Knight’s Tale, in which he plays Geoff Chaucer, and Baz Luhrmann, Nicole Kidman, and Ewan McGregor answered questions from mem- bers after a screening of Moulin Rouge. Baz spoke passionately about his film, and it was clear Nicole and Ewan had loved the experience of working with him and each other.

DRAMA NETWORKING EVENING
Nick Elliot, Controller of Network Drama for ITV and new BAFTA Council Member, kicked off the third in our popular series of Networking Evenings. Despite the competition (an England game on BBC1 and a Scotland game on Channel 5) we still attracted over 200 guests work- ing in film and television drama.
Those in attendance includ- ed Gareth Neame, Head of Drama Commissioning Independents at the BBC, Executive Producer Mike Dormer, Tiger Aspect Head of Drama Greg Brenman, Phillip Shelley and Nick Symons from Carlton. From BBC Wales we
were pleased to have Head of Drama Matthew Robinson, Commissioning Editor Angharad Jones, and Senior Bi-Media Producer Foz Allen.
Our next networking evening will be held on October 23, this time focusing on film. The London Screenings will be taking place at this time so it promises to be a lively event.

24P HIGH DEFINITION
A BAFTA TUTORIAL
Producers, Directors and others from the Film and Television industry gathered in the Princess Anne Theatre for an event designed to de-mystify the language and technology of 24P High Definition production acquisition.
With the US Film Industry having, with a little help from George Lucas, embraced 24P High Definition acquisition for- mat, the day long BAFTA Tutorial was aimed at ensuring UK based film and television practitioners were brought right up to date with the latest tech- nological developments and to have the opportunity to see at close hand the equipment devel- oped by Panasonic, Panavision and Sony for the format.
Introducing the event for BAFTA, Chair of Events, Jill James said that she was delight- ed to welcome delegates to the second in the series of BAFTA Tutorials which aimed to give a technical insight to new devel- opments in the industry.
BAFTA, she said, was “par- ticularly grateful to the cam- era manufacturers for having made equipment available to BAFTA members in advance of IBC”, some of the equipment was in Europe for the first time. It was, she concluded, “a matter of great importance to BAFTA that it supported creative and technical excel- lence in the fields of film and television” and she hoped that members would find the day valuable.
The Chair for the event was Chris Daubney (Director of Consultants, Daubney Needham Associates Ltd - DNA) one of the leading consultants in the UK on Digital technology and practice. Chris said that the whole day was brought about by the intense interest expressed at the Production Show earlier in the year which had resulted in DNA spending time in the USA after NAB this year analysing Hollywood practice.
Chris outlined the many per- mutations of High Definition that were currently available at 24P, 25P,30Pandon50Hzor60Hz with various numbers of scan- ning lines. It was important for Producers to know at the time of acquisition the likely use to which the product was being put and on which continent. However, in a global context, 24P offered a rugged format that was capable of use in acquisi- tion, theatrical release through E. Cinema and archiving.
The new medium had been quickly adopted by filmmakers in the USA and the interest in Europe was gathering speed with the BBC using it for Drama in Scotland, a number of Features being shot with it in France, Gerard Depardieu hav- ing just shot his film Vidocq, about the legendary French detective with it. Vidocq would in fact premiere on September 19 in Paris and be the first film made in this way in Europe to go into exhibition.

Following Chris Daubney was Peter Wilson from Snell and Wilcox Ltd. If the audience was confused by some of the terminology and numbers, Snell and Wilcox had equip- ment that enabled 24P pictures to be configured into any known format and get rid of the confusion.
