Duncan Kenworthy argues British films suffer from an uneven playing field when it comes
to a close encounter with critics.
My next door neighbour is a well known and well respect- ed newspaper columnist and when I remembered the other day that the deadline for this First Person column I’d been inveigled into writing was looming large, I asked him if he had any wisdom to offer me on becom- ing a media journalist for a day.
He thought seriously for a moment before handing me his pearl of greatest price: “Just slag everybody off.”
Now this wasn’t any old advice, you understand. This was the considered opinion of an erudite columnist. I told him: “I don’t know how to slag everybody off. I’m a film producer, not a journal-
ist”- thereby,Isuppose,alreadystartingtofollowhisadvice.
