LIGHTING THE EMOTION
AN INTERVIEW WITH
ZORAN VELJKOVIC
T here’s nothing like a ticking clock to focus the mind and sharpen the resolution. When Belgrade-born Zoran Veljkovic took over at the last minute on the new British production, Dangerous Parking, he had just one week of ‘prep’ before shooting was due to start. “The bigger the challenge, the more excited I get,” he notes. And Dangerous Parking, based on the cult 1999 novel by Stuart
Browne, who died two weeks before his first and only book was published, was always going to be a challenge.
For not only was Peter Howitt - best known as helmer of hit films like Sliding Doors and Johnny English - the writer-director but he was also going to be firmly front of camera starring as Noah Arkwright in Browne’s semi- autobiographical, often hallucinatory story of a filmmaker, former alcoholic and drug abuser suffering from cancer. Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.
Alongside Howitt, who apart from cameo appearances in his own films was once a stage actor and sitcom star in the BBC’s popular Bread, is a cast that includes Saffron Burrows, Sean Pertwee, Rachael Stirling, Alice Evans, Tom Conti and Dervla Kirwan.
