or a key flashback scene we focused the camera on a child, without any detail of what else was going on. I had a bungee; it’s like a rubber piece of tube
you can get from a hospital, and it’s really elastic and very strong.
We tied it a couple of times round the camera and our steadicam operator – who was a big strong guy – supported the weight. The tube allowed me to move the camera with very soft movements. I could manipu- late it in a very fluid way.
When it’s low budget you become creative and sometimes that actually works out quite well in terms of telling the story.
But from the beginning the thing that interested me was telling this guy’s story, it was never about amazing lighting for its own sake. It had to be honest, and that appeals to me a lot.” ■
