accommodation. Some of the most notable artists who lived and worked in Chelsea included Dante Gabriel Rossetti,J.M.W. Turner, James McNeill Whistler,William Holman Hunt and John Singer Sargent. The author,Virginia Woolf, was also a resident of Chelsea and created a prominent literary circle from her family’s home on the King’s Road, where the more affluent residents of Chelsea resided in more distant days. The Chelsea College of Art was also a factor in the establishment of Chelsea as a haunt of young artists progressing careers. Chelsea retains that heritage for artistic and creative residents as well as property in- vestors! As such, Mitre House maintains that tradition with many framed and impressive contemporary and modern works of art well exhibited throughout the building for the benefit of both residents and visitors alike, including works/prints by Joe Tilson, Richard Hamilton,Alan Jones, Pat Nagel, Adrian George,JackVettriano,Henri Matisse,W. Suidmak,Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee,Amedeo Modigliani, Jim Dine, Mark Rothko, Georges Braque, Michael English and Pablo Picasso to name but a few. But regrettably the days of old, when one could inhabit Chelsea for a modest sum, are long gone. Some of the most expensive properties in London are now located here but the artistic bohemian past of the area is thankfully still preserved by the College of Arts as well as by the Chelsea Art Club and of course Mitre House...!.The area since the 1960s remains, along with Knightsbrige,a fashionable and expensive shopping oasis for tourists and locals from far and wide. The Olde Communal Décor “Oh là là, Scandale”...? (photos below left)The old interior before the recent refurbishment after decades of neglect and a total disregard of the period’s design integrity, but regrettably the new décor was deemed “vulgar, cheap and unsuitable” by certain “non-resident’ lessees who preferred white & taupe on the walls, a black lift, no artworks nor topiary and God forbid, no colourful dustbins nor Xmas decorations..!
