“It’s all to do with ancillary markets,” says Cinenova’s Director of Operations, Wojtek Rutkowski. “They’re very impor- tant these days. Most of the movies are Buena Vista and Columbia TriStar and then the rest are acquired via independ- ent distributors. We show them in their original language, with Dutch subtitles, unless they are kids’ animated movies, when we normally dub them. I would say we get them about a year into their life cycle.”
A very clever idea, then, by the big film companies to show- case their wares, while still mak- ing money. The majority of what you see on screen is Hollywood
lihood of us ever putting money into films, that’s not what we are about.”
So where does Fuji come in? “We use Fuji tape stock to broadcast all of our movies,” reveals Rutkowski. “The films come in on Digibeta and then we do any post-production that needs to be done in our edit suites in London. Then they are fed into our transmis- sion suite and broadcast across the Dutch and Flemish-speaking regions.”
“As well as the movies themselves, we also show ‘making-of films’ and promos,” he continues, “which are packaged in Britain. There is no origi- nal programming, although we do re- version an American show called Inside Hollywood, giving it more of a focus on European cinema.”
As such, operations are split between the West End and Amsterdam (“there was a lot of travelling at the beginning!”), with 16 employees in the former and a further five in the market- ing and finance departments in Holland. Technical Operations are over- seen by Rutkowski, a Pole who arrived at Cinenova after eight years at the

“There is only a limited amount of local production,” admits Rutkowski. “The Dutch don’t produce many movies. If there is a Dutch movie, we will always try and show it, and without subtitles, of course. But there is no like-
