LIGHTING UP LONDON
Make Britain Proud - Top sports and screen stars
line up for the 2012 Olympic bid film
T o the strains of soul singer Heather Small’s
chest-poundingly anthemic ‘Proud’, a star line-up worthy of a megadollar blockbuster passes glossily before the cameras for 4
mins 25 secs.
Blink and you might just miss Dame
Helen Mirren, David Beckham, Dame Kelly Holmes, Jeremy Irons, Amir Khan, Joseph Fiennes, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Johnny Vaughan, wheelchair athlete Ade Adepitan, Martine McCutcheon, Denise Van Outen and Griff Rhys Jones. Among others. And wasn’t that a for- mer 007 (Sir Roger Moore) alongside the current Miss Moneypenny (Samantha Bond)?
It’s all in the cause of Make Britain Proud, the official London 2012 Olympic bid film, co-written by Jono
Wardle and Andrew Singleton, and filmed in just eight days for £100,000 around the capital last autumn.
Produced for her company New Moon by group MD Caroline Rowland, directed by Daryl Goodrich and pho- tographed by Tim Green (the trio have been regular collaborators on com- mercials and COI films), their latest effort lights up London with eye-catch- ing aplomb.
According to Rowland, New Moon was one of eight companies that were finally short-listed for the COI assign- ment. “I think,“ she said, “they were very keen to work with a commercials director like Daryl because they want- ed that ‘high-end’ feel.“
Rowland paid credit to a number of organisations and companies - from Film London who helped facilitate locations especially at the last minute, to Fujifilm
and Deluxe who “basically made it possi- ble“ with donations of stock and services. The biggest challenge, she noted, “was to make the sort of bid film we felt London deserved with the time and money available, something with real- ly broad appeal. All of us went into this project very committed to that.“
As far as plans for the film is con- cerned, it is currently being used as a VNR (video news release) and has been regularly screened on TV. There are now advanced plans to cut a 60- second version for cinemas.
But will London actually clinch The Games? Final decision time is in late July. ■ QUENTIN FALK
