remains bright for the studio, buoyed along as it is by the big splash made by its iconic stars and the five picture deal that exists with DreamWorks. Next up will be Flushed Away, a CGI animated tale set among the colourful denizens of London’s sewers.
Still in development there is Tortoise Vs. Hare, a re-telling of Aesop’s fable in a documentary style. Perhaps this tale is an apt metaphor for the company. Oscar success is one

thing but in such a labour intensive corner of a traditionally financially precarious industry things change only slowly.
Freelance staff will hope for a change there, but the association with such a well received film and an enduring successful company can surely do no harm in the wider world of commercials and short films.
As for Nick Park and Steve Box, they enjoyed a well earned break after completing the gruelling five year jour- ney from the first seeds of inspiration to the full blossoming of their subse- quent success. The warm glow of appreciation for their work wherever it has been shown must also mean this is not the last we have seen of Wallace & Gromit, which is cracking news indeed. ■ ANWAR BRETT
