City-Country Children’s Learning Garden 8 Years of Environmental Impact, 100 Years of Waldorf Education
Every year since 2010, the students at Summerfield Waldorf School
and Farm (SWSF) come together with students at Sheppard Accelerated Elementary School (SAES) to sustainably garden a plot of land at SAES and focus on gardening curriculum that includes cooking, nutrition, science, math and reading.
In the last eight years, approximately 220 students from SAES and 60 students from SWSF have been impacted by the City-Country Children’s Learning Garden Project coming together to share
a love for the environment and be good stewards of the earth.
This year’s collaboration,
on April 3rd, is a
particularly important
one for SWSF students as
it marks participation in
the Greenbee Wildlife Web
Initiative -- a project honoring Waldorf education’s 100 year anniversary. For the Waldorf education centennial, students in over 160 Waldorf schools across North America will create an ecologically-green ‘continental parks system’ by planting pollinator gardens in their local communities to help bees and insects thrive. SWSF is using the partnership with SAES to be part of this global project making green spaces that support biodiversity.
