 By Diane McCurdy
Friend Request is a mystery thriller for the technological age. It does not
involve itself in the ghost in the machine type of supernatural hi-jinx, it defines as a horror story that could really happen.
Louise is a single mother and the proprietor of a successful business. She has just come through a painful divorce and has more or less moved on except for carrying a heavy burden of guilt for something that happened on prom night many years ago. “I’ve been a friend, daughter, a wife and a mother. Yet all the time, in the back of my mind, this one unforgivable act loomed --squashed, squeezed, parceled but always there.”
Louise gets a friend request on Facebook, nothing unusual about that
only that the person making the request has been presumed dead for twenty-five years. Maria Weston went missing on
that fateful prom night. Somehow Louise is involved, but how? We never find out until the ending pages so we are caught up in this web of suspense. That final dance
is a pivotal plot point so the chapters continuously shift from 1989 to 2016.
Louise first noticed Maria when she transferred into their school in the middle of senior year. Why she left her
other school is only hinted at but it was something traumatic. Maria isn’t your stereotypical make-up and mini-skirted teen. She is authentic and earthy, witty and unique. Maria and Louise become good friends but the elite clique of “mean girls” pressure Louise to bully Maria. Of course, Maria is hurt and angry. Many years later when a school reunion is being planned Louise gets the friend request presumably from the grave and she becomes unhinged and paranoid. Is someone playing a sick joke? Who would indulge in such a morbid prank? Could it be that Maria is really not dead? What secret is Louise hiding?

Author, Laura Marshall, enrolled in a three month novel writing class and produced this work. It has made the New
York Times best selling paperbacks list.
The narrative takes place in Britain but
it is interesting what import is given to that ritual rite of passage, the celebration that is the apotheosis of high school--the prom. Lately we have that spin off the “promposal” which is an entity unto itself. The prom in the novel took place in a school gymnasium but around here proms are likely to be staged on fancy yachts or elegant ballrooms and can cost anywhere from $200 to $2,000!

This is a good mystery and its strong point is its ability to sustain tension. The final pages are riveting. It demonstrates once again how much technology has invaded our lives.
