best seller’s lists. Kondo is sort of a Martha Stewart on steroids. She feels if possessions are organized and things that do not “spark joy” are discarded there will be a carry over of serenity and joy into daily life. My mind kept wandering to Kondo’s book while reading local author Susan Fekete’s memoir

Ten Boxes: A Story of Stuff because her theme is the antithesis of the KonMarie method. It focuses on what happens when messiness and disorganization take over a life. The author’s mother was, in impolite parlance, a hoarder but in today’s gentle correctness she would be known as a “keeper”. She was an intelligent woman, a nurse, but her weakness eventually devolved into pathology. The author gives her mother, Jonelle, credit for instilling in her a love of language. It is obvious that she has a great love and a caring respect for her mother even though much of the story chronicles the woman’s descent into near madness.

sibling given up for adoption, myriad unpaid bills and countless moves always with “stuff” in tow. There was never a garage sale that Jonelle could resist without stopping or an object of art that she could withstand the temptation
to make her own and once incorporated into the panoply of possessions its place was pretty much permanent. As time passed the “stuff” reproduced exponentially like the biblical loaves and fishes. In the end there were piles of books, clothes, dishes, trinkets, fabric, buttons, chocolate and cats...about 14 cats.
Aug 13 ~ Petaluma Women Who Write
The author’s style is warm and breezy but not shallow. She includes many popular references but beneath there are layers of philosophical ruminations. Books with attractive covers always entice me. The author makes the reader reference their own mothers and how eccentricities may be passed along with genes to either be like our mothers or strive to be the opposite. Ms. Fekete says of her mom, “She was a kind, wounded soul who loved stuff....and was compelled to carry the world’s stuff wherever she went.” This book would make a great, quirky independent movie.

The author’s childhood was fairly haphazard as she was jockeyed around between father and aunt as her mother followed various philosophies such as EST. Interjected into her pubescence was a mysterious pregnancy with that
