Marilee Ford and Sharon Feissel, featured artists in Riverfront Art Gallery’s Winter Show, are sharing the theme Heaven, Earth & The Space Between. Marilee comments, “The space between Heaven and Earth is really my theme...the transitions from Earth to Heaven and back again. For example, two pieces represent Earth
as viewed from above – the
view from the window of
an ascending plane and
from a satellite that sees
below earth’s surface. My
encaustic, A Drop into
Another World, I see as
drops into a world that
is evolving, suggesting
the continual alchemical
transformation of materials,
an Earth perhaps in the
process of formation, but
not there yet. Landscape
Between Heaven and Earth
feels like the mythic River
Styx to me, that transition
from solid Earth to the ethereal Heavens.”

 Sharon Feissel - CosmicConvergence
Marilee uses familiar mediums like watercolor, oil, and acrylic, but some works are encaustic (hot wax painting). She explains, “Encaustic is a time- honored method in which pigments are added to heated wax. Metal tools and special brushes, aided by heat lamps, etc., shape it before it cools. The wax can be sculpted and other materials can be collaged into the surface. Like watercolors, encaustic painting is unpredictable, with both risks and rewards. I find the movement of
wax in molten form and the depth created by layers and added materials to be exciting. The texture and rich colors always leave me quite satisfied.”
Sharon Feissel’s Cosmos
Series represents the
Heaven part of her show.
“I used a water bottle to
squirt the paints around –
something really new for
me,” she says. “Needless
to say, these pieces simply
evolved as I worked. Earth
is portrayed by paintings
and mixed media pieces
that suggest the meandering of the landscape and waterways. I also have several small, inexpensive pieces that represent familiar objects such as a building, sailboats, a shirt, a humorous toppling tower – in short a variety of earthbound subjects.”
Thru Jan 31 ~ 428 Collective -
Marilee Ford - View from the Window
Hammerfriar Gallery, Tues-Fri; 10- 6p, Sat; 10-5p, Hammerfriar Gallery, 132 Mill Street, Suite 101, Healdsburg, 707-473-9600, hammerfriar.com, jill@ hammerfriar.com
Asked how she has expressed “the space between”, Sharon replies, “Much of my show content is actually abstract and thus is visually neither Heaven nor Earth but has come from some place of inspiration whose touchstone may be partially Earth and partially Heaven, but not specifically of either. For example, my Kinesia photomontage abstracts were created digitally and use bits and pieces from my photographs of reflections in Lake Powell, AZ, but those pieces have been reassembled into a fantasy image.” Thus, both artists draw from what is neither Heaven nor Earth but the undefined space where creativity and imagination dwell.
