ANGELA cont’d from page 20
“I didn’t really think about you as an immigrant,” says Eric to Angela in the My American Dreams video about her life. “That’s never what defined you. You were defined by this wonderful person who had all these shared experiences with me and who wanted to spend your life with me.”
You can watch the PBS video “I am Angela” made by My American Dreams with help from NorCal Public Media on the station’s YouTube Chanel: youtube.com/watch?v=mFnmQcoNPHw. The video has been shown on KRCB / KPJK throughout last month and this month and is being shared throughout the PBS network.
NOTE: In June, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on the validity of the Trump Administration’s termination of DACA. If the Court sides with the Administration, some 750,000 others like Angela will lose their legal status and become subject to deportation.

By Dr. Steve Herrington, Sonoma County superintendent of schools,
I want to make clear to our community that yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court expanding the public charge rule does not affect public schools. Families need to know their students will still be able to access
important school services and school nutrition programs without penalty.
Families should not be fearful of sending their children to school.
Sonoma County school communities will continue to embrace and support all students and their families by providing a safe place to learn. In addition, we stand behind Sonoma County’s social services agencies who have been unfairly targeted by this discriminatory ruling.
This assault on legal immigration represents a sad day for America. We value all those who come to this country seeking a better way of life.
Under the new regulation, legal immigrants into the United States could be denied permanent residency if immigration authorities deem them “likely at any time to” enroll in any number of public benefits for more than a year.

The list of benefits includes food stamps, federal housing assistance and health insurance through Medicaid. The Supreme Court’s ruling does not affect public schools, school services, or school nutrition programs.
The mission of the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) is to foster student success through service to students, schools, and the community. SCOE is a partner to the county’s 40 districts, providing services and oversight that help them serve roughly 71,000 students.
