You know you’re in a small town when the big news is Palace of Fruit’s new green paint job. “The shade is a fruit color, Prickly Pear Cactus,” Gina Ebertus said. “Last time we painted, we asked customers to vote for different colors, and they were all adamant it had to stay green.” That’s what a landmark is, right? Always reliably the same.
Faron’s at Mack’s is serving lunch, appetizers & dinner, seven days, at Mack’s Bar & Grill. Yep the same Faron Bailey from Faron’s New Orleans Style BBQ out Bodega Avenue. He’s also got a weekend breakfast. We’re talkin’ hush puppies, shrimp-n-grits, BBQ, wild boar sausage sando, shrimp or oyster poboy and more. Dine in or take out.

The pleasure of living in a rural town comes with a few downsides. I’m not sure if most local pet owners are aware of the danger of predatory mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, possums, and other hungry hunters. Yes, here in our backyards wild predators hunt small to midsize cats, dogs, chickens, sheep, and goats. I dropped in on an ongoing mountain lion sightings conversation. Last year, a neighbor introduced me to Nextdoor, a free social media site. The mountain lion and missing pet chat has been centered on local lions seen in Penngrove since September of last year. This February the mountain lion conversation has been both lively, ongoing and enlightening.
Food Centric in Penngrove
Yanni’s Sausage changed hands to Yia Yia’s Café and it’s open! Taste the Gyro, burgers & dogs, Greek salad, vegan lentil soup, and a GBLT (Greek bacon, lettuce tomato with basil puree, mayo or tzatziki), or Popi’s Flaming Cheese (Saganaki cheese on grilled pita or Italian bread).
Big Shout out to Penngrove Sonoma County Gazette Columnist, Lynda Brown who has brought knowledge, expert mountain lion resources, and a deep understanding to this neighborly chat. Interested in learning more about
your wild neighbors? Dr. Quinton Martins, lead investigator with Audubon Canyon Ranch’s Living with Lions project, talks about co-existing with these elusive cats. Take a look at this project active in our area, Living with Lions: ACR’s mountain lion research and education project posted on Audubon Canyon Ranch. You can read more on their site egret.org/living-with-lions. Sure, local ranchers and farmers know we live with nightly visitors, hungry visitors with claws, and fangs. One mountain lion was actually on the back deck of a home watching the family cat through the sliding glass doors. So,
Penngrove Market is set to open in June. Sofia Lim, former owner of Taverna Sofia in Healdsburg, is managing the kitchen for Culinary Director, Joe Ferraro. Together they’ll offer the best of local and seasonal foods. The market itself
is a beautiful space, with wood flooring, racks yet to be filled with groceries, and a coffee bar that will also have wine and beer for enjoying on the front patio. Artist Marla Pederson painted a gorgeous mural of scattered orange flowers, sprinkled with names of community members who helped revive the market. We can’t wait!
Still, the hands-down favorite for breakfast, lunch and community nexus is JavAmore Cafe. Penngrove is blessed.
if you have small pets or animals you treasure, please keep them inside from sunset to sunrise. Ticks continue to thrive in rural areas. Check your dog’s and cat’s paws often this summer. Check your own ankles, socks, and pants, too.

Rat poison kills beyond rats. Birds of prey such as owls, hawks, and eagles, plus all predatory hunters such as bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, and raccoons all die from eating poisoned rats. Science shows that reduction or removal of top predators becomes unhealthy for they natural prey animals and ecosystems. For human residents, this means thousands more rats, gophers, field mice, etc. Please trap or kill in a way that will not upset the balance of our wild neighbors.
Lions, and ticks, and bobcats, oh my!

Redwood Writers’ Hot Summer Nights in July!
Author, Friend, and Redwood Writer, Pamela Fender, for six years
has organized and hosted Hot Summer Nights for Redwood Writers at Copperfield’s Books in Santa Rosa. These four free evening events introduce local authors. Fun events where you can meet your next favorite book or author. Yes, some Redwood Writers write book series. Not just me. Would love to have you come to the July 10th evening as I will be the final author on that program with my first, Red Sky at Night: Dog Leader Mysteries.
I’m a habitué of thrift and consignment stores. It’s the thrill of the chase, and I keep the cycle alive by donating goods, too. I spotted a Deja Blue sign, next to the Ross store in Plaza South at 141 North McDowell Blvd., Petaluma .The upscale boutique is the first of its kind in Sonoma County. It was beautifully organized, fresh, clean, spacious and arranged by color. They are powered by Goodwill, supporting the mission of job training. This store goes for quality items, and it shows. It’s open 7 days a week, 9 am – 8 pm and donations are accepted daily until 5 pm—bring the good stuff!
