Farm to School Program
By Tracy Batchelder
The School Garden Network of Sonoma County (SGN) and the California
Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) have received a $211,000 grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture 2015 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
and Oakmont Drive
The grant is for a two-year
collaborative program between
SGN and CAFF to address gaps in
nutrition and specialty crop con-
sumption in Sonoma County with a
robust, countywide farm-to-school
program. SGN will offer financial
and technical assistance, as well as
nutrition education classes, to school
garden programs. Food access and
nutrition workshops for the families
of participating students will be
held throughout the year. SGN will
be focusing on those schools that
have a high percentage of students
on free and reduced meals in order
to reach those children and their families that have limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Under the grant, CAFF will reach more schools through their Harvest of the Month (HOTM) program which allows students to taste locally produced specialty crops and educates them around the importance of these crops for nutrition and farming in the region. SGN will coordinate farm field trips for schools to visit specialty crop farms, particularly to those farms that supply HOTM.
“We are thrilled to receive a Specialty Crop Block Grant this year”, says Aimee Vorhaus, a member of the Board of Directors of the School Garden Net- work. “School Garden Network has been working to support school gardens and nutrition programs for a long time, and it’s gratifying to see our efforts val- idated and encouraged. This really is a win-win for Sonoma County children, schools, farmers and the community. Our organization can now provide even greater opportunities to connect even more children with growing and eat-
ing fresh fruits and vegetables, which we believe inspires a lifetime of healthy habits, and an ongoing partnership with local farmers.”
