Traveling in Siberia has been quite an eye opener filled with adventure and challenges. Being the first Americans welcomed into the Mrylya village was so surprising and an honor. In so many ways the landscapes remind me of our Sonoma Coast and Sonoma Hills. They have big green hillsides (our’s fades to brown I know) big gardens, rivers and creeks for swimming and floating, and lots of trees. Maybe the difference is that it is a vast land. Miles and miles of open space, but than again we have miles and miles of open space too! The roads are rough. They said they like it that way as it keeps people away. We have said that about Highway One.
The Sakha people we met were warm and friendly, much like our friends. They enjoyed sharing stories about their daily lives which are much like many of your lives if you are blessed to live close to the land. They love the simple life. We met the blacksmiths, the cow ranchers, horse ranchers, local school teachers, the woman mayor, and sweet children. Every home pretty much has fresh milk products including horse milk. And every home has an ice storage area under ground used to keep food cold throughout the summer and fall. No need for refrigerators.
Our connection is Fort Ross. Many of the people who came from Siberia as an employee of the Russian American Company were Sakha people. They lived and worked at Colony Ross and often intermarried the local indigenous people. It is a fascinating history and the connection and conversations continue. So blessed to attend their festivals which are much like ours at Fort Ross with singing and dancing.
So please put on your calendar the Fort Ross Festival July 27 starting at 10:00 in the morning. Enjoying the historic recreated fort as it comes alive with costumed people who love sharing. Enjoy food dancing and singing as well
as beautiful landscapes. Here is a link for more info fortross.org/fort-ross- festival-2019.htm
The Point Arena Fourth of July celebrations and parade are both lots of hometown fun July 6 and 7. Street fair. Spectacular fireworks over the ocean and the next day a true family parade. Check out all the details at pointarena.ca.gov/2019/04/independence-weekend-celebration-2019/
Many events take place at Gualala Art Center this month including
Global Harmony Camp for kids, a large auto show, art openings and music performances. Please check them out at gualalaarts.org/category/events/
and Point Arena Theater has several live shows to learn about arenatheater. org/. I mean come on now, there is plenty to do. There is not enough space
in the column to list it all. If you want to get outside take a stroll in the Gualala Point Regional Park trails and beach. Or the Point Arena Lighthouse pointarenalighthouse.com/ area including the Stornetta Lands.
In closing I am reminded of the many gifts of friendships and gifts of beautiful land that is around our planet.
Most of all enjoy what is in front of you. It’s a beautiful world.
There will be a SPECIAL Coast and River MAC meeting in August with State Senator Mike McGuire - STAY TUNED!
THE ROAD IS NOW OPEN!
Caltrans stepped upafter residents voiced their concerns on the lane closure and put an
emergency fix to open both lanes just south of Bay Hill Road. Winter storms had damaged the last remaining redwood culvert. You can now drive through Bodega Bay on both lanes! Final repairs are planned later in the year but will mostly take place during the evening so little to no disruption.
So thankful Caltrans worked 24 hours a day for 3 days to open both lanes. Our voices mattered!
From 5th District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins on Bodega Bay: “ For too long, we’ve treated the coast as a cash cow, but didn’t reinvest those dollars locally in community improvements. I’m proud that we are investing more money in Bodega Bay than ever before—with an ambitious repavement project for Bodega Bay’s evacuation route, money into upstaffing BBFPD, and General Fund dollars going into a complete dock replacement for the sport fishing dock at Porto Bodega. While these are good steps, there’s clearly more work to be done... and I will continue to work on prioritizing coastal investments. I know we still have many local roads in need of repair and I’m working on identifying funding sources for residential areas like old town”. Lynda.Hopkins@sonoma-county.org
Business After Hours—The Bodega Bay Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their monthly get-together on Thursday, July 18th from 5:30 – 7pm at Estero Café in Valley Ford with Ryan & Samantha Ramey as our hosts. facebook.com/EsteroCafe/ Also, come see Jean Warren’s watercolor painting exhibit of sheep and cows and more. We Have to Keep Fishing, That’s What we Do
Local Commercial Fisherman Dick Ogg shared this sentiment when speaking about the current commercial salmon season. “Some people have been fortunate and some not so but overall a fair season so far. The weather has been uncooperative at times, but we still have been able to get out to bring our product to market. It hasn’t been easy, but who said commercial fishing was easy anyway. Marketing the Salmon has been a major challenge, even though we have the best Salmon in the world. To begin to get a solid customer base, some processors are selling the product at their cost to get things going again.”
