My friends and family will probably nod their heads and roll their eyes knowingly!
There is no denying that another envelope will no doubt land in their mail, soon, with something I decided needed to be “shared.”
Whether it is just something amusing, enlightening, politically significant, a new archeological discovery, or something I hope might influence a point of view – I just can’t help clipping. Actually, I don’t remember a time when I read a newspaper, magazine, report or book without scissors, tape, or place saver tabs handy.
Jul 31 ~ Genetic Testing for Alzheimer’s
It started a very long time ago when my Dad’s close friend taught me how to meaningfully read the New York Times! Frank S. was a stately old gent who would visit our home on holidays and would drive all the way to Boston on Sundays just to get his copy of the Sunday New York Times. I was probably about 13 when I first became fascinated with that pattern. Boston was about 40 miles from our rural home, and it seemed to me a very important ritual. He would return, accept a fresh cup of coffee from Mother then get settled in our living room and start reading.

I remember the first time Frank noticed me spying on him with a curious look on my face. He’d fold the paper down and look over the top at me with
a smile. Then one morning, he said I could either join him, learn to read the paper—or stop staring at him from the doorway! That was the beginning of a life- long love affair with the New York Times!

Frank coached me into an important habit. We would read the Times from cover to cover, and, at certain times, he would ask me to tell him “what I got” out of a particular aspect! He insisted that it was important to read all the sections.
Ongoing ~ Senior Dining Room Lunch
He believed you needed an “overview” of understanding of what was happening in the world – not just what was specifically to your personal interest. He believed that the Sunday New York Times was a reliable source for getting that perspective!

Now, about clipping... Somewhere along the way Frank’s teaching has morphed into my compulsive activity of clip-and-share! It’s like a second-level form of conversation where I have to be within reach of scissors, envelopes ready to stuff, and pens for underling emphasis -- in prep for my HP All-In- One! A highlighter helps, too, and recently, my eldest son gave me a delightful booklet of very elegant “tabs” that make marking places in books so much better than post-its or underlining!
Most of my recipients are gracious... Some even respond! But I do acknowledge it’s really more about me than them! I also believe it is a part
of a solutions package that helps me bridge the often huge void between “interpersonal communication” then, and the impersonal touch of now. Remember when folks spoke primarily directly face-to-face? Remember when one could see facial and body language while talking, arguing, debating and questioning? While texting, emailing and forwarding certainly have awesome benefits, they do lack those other dimensions, and soon retreat into the never- never land of electronic storage.
I like to think that while a clipping isn’t me face-to-face with recipients, it does have substance. While not “me,” they say something about me. They might even hang around or get shared! I rarely receive clippings, and I try not to over-interpret that reality! I view my mania as an outgrowth of Frank’s early influence, and in some way, it’s a thank you to him for caring to teach me how to read with integrity. So, I clip and send and, so far, no one’s complained!
