Veterans Day Parade and Flyover
Petaluma’s incredible Veterans Day Parade will be held on Veterans Day, which this year falls on Sun, Nov 11. Recognized as one of the best Veterans Day Parades in the U.S., roughly 40,000 people visit Petaluma to watch and participate in the parade.
This quote makes me stop to appreciate all the people who have come before me. It renews my thankfulness and gratitude for the trail they blazed, and the trail I am making, both today and tomorrow.
Penngrove Market’s Art & Craft Fair – Nov. 3 Come and join the fun at this new Art & Craft Fair benefitting Penngrove Elementary School. With live music, food, samples, and many local artists, it’s sure to be a good time! 10am-4pm. Free. 753-4974 penngrovemarket.com
Veterans Day is held on November 11 to celebrate the end World War I. The Armistice with Germany officially began at the 11th hour or the 11th day or the 11th month in 1918. Although it used to be overserved as Armistice Day, it was renamed in 1954 to Veterans Day, and honors those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. By contrast, Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service, and Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. holiday, honors those that currently serve in the U.S. Military.
Time Capsule Entombed - Nov. 11 A time capsule sponsored by the Penngrove Historical Society will be buried in front of Penngrove Market on November 11. It will be clearly marked so that in 50 years it can be unearthed to the delight and amusement of Penngrovians of the year 2068.
As always, there will be plenty of flyovers, including a Vietnam era Huey helicopter, Sheriff and Coast Guard helicopters, and various historic planes from the Petaluma Airport and Pacific Air Museum. Other highlights will include Grand Marshals Terry Park and Ken Vabkar, both Vietnam veterans, Clydesdales pulling a coach with Gold Star parents Lombardi Harriott, and USCG Two Rock and Cotati Harley Clubs.
All members of the community are welcome at the ceremony at 2:00
PM and to bring an item of current local interest to include in the sturdy, waterproof PVC casket. Photos, business cards and other small mementos of life in Penngrove in 2018 are appropriate. The goal is to give our grandkids— or our grandkids’ grandkids—a direct link to life here today.
For those in the parade, staging begins at 11 a.m., on 4th Street, from D Street down to I Street. For those wishing to attend the parade, music will
be presented in the gazebo in Walnut Park (D & 4 Streets), before the parade kicks off at 1 p.m. The parade normally lasts for roughly and hour and a half and culminates back at Walnut Park at roughly 2:45 p.m., with an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and an introduction of speakers. Also, Sonoma County’s very own Andrea Kraut will sing the National Anthem and God Bless America. Major sponsors include Friedman’s Home Improvement, Clover Sonoma, Exchange Bank, and De Carli’s Propane. More info at www. petalumaveteransparade.com
Book Sale
Penngrove has changed in the past few years. How much it will change in the next half-century we cannot imagine. Let’s give our descendants a glimpse of our hometown and why we are happy to be living here.
During the Bicentennial year, a time capsule was interred. Just where, no one seems to recall. It was on the Penngrove school grounds we believe. Construction has taken place there, and the lay of the land is not what it was in the 1970s. If anyone remembers its whereabouts, let us know.
Our new time capsule will be placed under the concrete entry way of the Penngrove Market. A marker made of local stone and etched by stone artist, Jennifer Bell of Lost Creek Etching, will cap the burial site as a lasting reminder of the historical treasures concealed within.
The Friends of the Petaluma Library hold excellent book sales three times
a year, with the next one coming up in November. It will start with the children’s book sale on Fri, Nov 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed the next

Giving Thanks at The Gardens – Nov. 18 Penngrove’s Artful Arrangements farm invites us to gather at 2pm for a guided tour of the grounds. Kids can feed the chickens, learn about farm animals and parents help them plant a plant to nurture. There will be music, libations & a community meal. Walk through The Portal of Time—a symbolic standing interactive art installation that’s 12’ in diameter—and learn how the past shapes your decisions today, which impact the future! This free event is
the 5th annual Giving Thanks family day. If you haven’t yet been to the farm, you might like to know it includes a small event venue for groups up to 75 for family gatherings such as weddings, anniversaries, reunions and celebrations.
Yanni’s Sausage Reports Yanni and Francesca report they were “Driving the Yanni Mobile on 101 and an SUV pulls up next to us asking us to take the next exit. We follow the car and find out the driver is the owner of Merriam Vineyards and she needs to buy Loukaniko for a harvest dinner. First time we’ve gotten a new customer driving on the freeway!” We miss your little shop in Penngrove, but we’re glad you’re getting placed in so many markets, and we can still get your tasty sausages at Yia Yia’s Café “The Grateful Greek” in downtown PGrove.
Lighted Boat Parade CANCELLED but Santa is still coming
Due to continuing issues related to the lack of dredging of the Petaluma
Sunday, November 18 at 2 PM – 4 PM. Artful Arrangement, 205 Orchard Lane, Penngrove.
However, Santa’s Riverboat Arrival is still schedule for Sat, Nov 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the River Turning Basin. With only one boat and a 4 foot tide, Santa and Mrs. Claus should be able to sail in and disembark at the River Plaza Shopping Center with little trouble. “Entertainment starts at 11:30am and Santa arrives at noon. He & the Mrs. hand out candy canes on the way to their “workshop.” Stay to take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus in front of TAPS.” TAPS Beer Co. and Kitchen, which always has a great selection of both local and international beers on tap, along with some great food.

River, the hugely popular Lighted Boat Parade has been cancelled. Not only is it very hard to move that number of boats up the ever-shallowing river, but the majority of the docks around the Turning Basin are now closed because at low to medium tides, they are actually sitting on the mud. Those docks are meant to be used while afloat and can be damaged if weighted down with people while sitting on the mud.
Festival of Trees
On Fri, Nov 30, from 6 – 9 p.m., the Fabulous Women and the Hotel Petaluma invite holiday guests to “stroll through the hotel and bid on magical trees decorated by local businesses, listen to live Christmas music, enter our raffle, shop at the holiday market place, enjoy our sweet shop, and take photos
with Santa. It’s a festive occasion for the entire family. The proceeds support charitable causes and admission is free.”
