   November Business—Before the Winter Holidays
It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time. — Winston Churchill
Please Vote on November 6th
Happy Thanksgiving. Gratitude does more than simply give thanks
on Thanksgiving in November. I have kept a gratitude journal off and on for years. One form of regular gratitude practice, which I have benefited from requires a simple two step process. Write three things in your day that you are grateful for, next write down why each of those three things happened. The purpose is to notice how we make positive and enjoyable events happen in our lives then set aside time to feel our blessings.
“Where Sushi Meets Borsch!” On Saturday November 3, Sebastopol World Friends will host a buffet-style dinner showcasing food from Takeo City, Japan, and Chyhyryn, Ukraine, our two sister cities. Doors open at 5:30 PM at the Enmanji Buddhist Temple’s Memorial Hall, 1200 Gravenstein Highway South. The program and dinner start at 6 PM, suggested donation, $20/adults, $10/children.
“Where Sushi Meets Borsch!” celebrates the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship with Chyhyryn, as well as the 33-year friendship with Takeo City. As both travelers and hosts, hundreds of our youth and adults have been grass-roots ambassadors promoting “world peace, one friend at a time.”
Raise the Roof, West County! Supervisor Lynda Hopkins joins the City Council on Sunday November 4 for a free Housing Fair. From 1:30 to 5 PM at the Community Cultural Center, residents of the greater Sebastopol area can learn about existing and new housing policies that make it easier
to create Accessory Dwelling Units [ADU’s] and Junior ADU’s. They’ll
also be able to meet planners and public and private sector providers, learn about SHARE Sebastopol [a new program about home-sharing], and connect with affordable housing resources and services. Free childcare and light refreshments will be provided.
Thinking of Unique Local Gifts? Meet Two Art Trails’ Artists
On the Way to Election Day November 6 For the last two months, I’ve walked door-to-door for my re-election campaign to talk to voters. I enjoyed conversations about how much people love living in this town. If folks did complain, it was most often about speeding in their neighborhood. Another frequent concern: inadequate parking in neighborhoods, especially where business on our main streets back up to homes.
Her plates, bowls, mugs, and platers have a rare charm. Perhaps it is the harmonious blues, golds, and earth tones? Lee sells her work at Cotati’s Stones Throw Gifts. Also, she will be on hand at Cotati Shop and Stroll, downtown on December 1st. Website artyoucanuse.com or @art_you_can_use and phone number 707)558-7681.
Thank you to those who endorsed me, put my sign in their yard, or contributed to my campaign. I appreciate the support for my candidacy.
Photos of Earth’s Beauty by Bill Theis came as a complete surprise
to me. I had never viewed his work before ArtTrails 2018. We were greeted warmly by Bill’s wife on the porch, decked out with turnstiles full of black and white and color photography greeting cards. Inside, we met Theis and got to know him. “From an early age diversity fascinated me, especially the patterns I saw in commonplace things.” Patterns in sand dunes, the bark of tree trunks, and unique plants continue to be the subjects of his photographic studies. Not only was his photography of national art quality but the medium and large framed photos were super affordable. He specializes in color- popping close up nature prints on metal sheets, trees, roots, ferns. These prints come ready to hang, no frame needed. Keep Sebastopol’s Progressive Leaders Working for Your
Future I’ve endorsed my Council colleagues, Patrick Slayter and Una Glass, and hope that the three of us can continue to work for Sebastopol’s future. We have served together productively for the last four years, focusing on: responsible budgeting, environmental stewardship, safety improvements, housing reform, economic vitality, and social justice. During our tenure, Sebastopol has continued to lead the County in many ways. We have built effective relationships with regional and state government to the benefit of our City.

Vote YES on M, Q and R YES on Measure M will provide Sebastopol much needed, additional funds to maintain and restore our public parks. YES on Measure Q will keep our sales tax just the way it is now. It will
provide about 16% of the revenue for the City’s General Fund and help pay for City services. It is not a new tax on your home or property.
I met Una Rosa at a Farmer’s Market and loved her jewel like colors in neck scarfs, shawls and hand-woven hats. She uses all-natural materials, cotton, silk and hemp. Each piece radiates beauty. Email: mizunamas@gmail.com Phone: (707) 3226337
YES on Measure R will increase the “bed tax” on visitors who stay at a hotel or other temporary lodging in town. This tax increase means that Sebastopol will match what many other cities charge overnight tourists.
Shout out to special events. Do visit the Fall Exhibition at Cotati Historical Society November 4th from 1 to 4pm.
Make Your Vote Count on Election Day November 6 If you’re an absentee voter—Sebastopol has many—make sure your vote counts by returning your ballot envelope early or on time. Last minute? Check the County website for the drop-off locations. Otherwise, see you at the polls.
For local gifts come to Cotati’s Shop and Stroll on December 1st.
Get Involved at the Ground Level There are two vacancies on the Planning Commission and three on the Design Review Board. The deadline to apply is 4 PM on November 26, the Monday after the Thanksgiving Holiday. Terms start January 1, 2019. Details are available at ci.sebastopol.ca.us.
Downtown merchants welcome you with open doors to comes see what they have to offer. It’s not too early to shop for gifts. Think of it as a way of spreading the expense over time as well as spreading joy to people - and animals - you love and appreciate..
These appointments are a great way to learn about City government: the political responsibilities; information and education about land use; roles and relationships with City Staff; procedures and rules for meetings; the law. They are a stepping stone to City Council.
Happy Thanksgiving - so much to be THANKFUL for! It’s good to focus on gratitude for what we treasure. Make a list of what matters most to you. If the list includes people, this is the time of year to tell them how thankful you are they they are in your life.

First, Andrew and I visited an attractive ceramic studio. The artist, Rhonda Lee, calls her work “pottery for everyday use”. Loved chatting with Lee in her backyard and studio. When visitors watch her throw a pot, they remark how easy it looks. “Forty years of experience makes it appear simple.”
