December Chill:
Whoa! The cold weather here in Rio Nido has been the topic of conversation at the RN Post o ce. Locals are bundled up and trying to stay warm and dry. We have had quite a bit of rain this month as our river is nice and full. Many of us here have been running our wood burning stoves and pellet stoves to stay warm. I know that many of you are ready for Spring already to ease the chill for warmer days are welcome. Interesting enough many owers are already blooming. I’ll be honest, I’m bloody ready for Summer myself.
Happy New Year groovy Guerneville readers! What a year 2016 was and I am looking forward to 2017 being the grooviest ever...
December 2016 was started with our Merchant Open House and Parade of Lights, which was a HUGE success, thanks to the Friends
The Holidays – Woot-Woot:
No Home Yet: The County has backed out of the purchase of George’s Hideaway for use as a “Transitional Shelter and Support Facility” as most
of you have heard. At this time, there is no replacement property / location decided on, nor has there been any new development on what will become of the historical “Angie’s/George’s Hideaway” building in the future. At press time, no nal decisions had been made. We will keep you updated on the future projected use of the groovy place.
We are DETACHED: December also brought us news about the Palm Drive detachment. For those of you who are not familiar with the subject, Margaret Benelli (God rest her soul) originated TAUT (Taxpayers Against Unfair Taxes) to detach the geographical boundaries of three Russian River elementary school districts, Forestville, Guerneville and Monte Rio, from the Palm Drive Health Care District, due to a changed landscape for the provision of health services in Sonoma County. This group has been working a long, long time at this and the detachment has been approved! They still need your help with contributions/ donations, as the attorney and publishing fees must be paid in order for this to go on record. At this time, I believe they are about $2,500 short, so if you would like to help them out, please go to the R R Taxpayers Support Detachment GoFundMe page.
Now, on to the groovy New Year! January 4th, the Russian River Chamber of Commerce will be holding its Mixer at Applewood Inn & Spa.
The groovy, gracious host will be non other than Bob Reeves! Don’t forget
every Tuesday is Give Back Tuesday at the Rainbow Cattle Company. This month’s bene ciaries are River of Praise, The Billy Club, Clean River Alliance, Guerneville Farmers Market and Center for Sacred Studies.
Readers Theatre kicks o its 13th season at the Guerneville Regional Library in January 2017. Readers Theatre is a one hour program of one-act plays read by groovy local residents. Produced and presented by the River Friends
of the Library, the programs take place on the last Wednesday of January, February and March at 7pm, with an encore on the following Saturday at 2pm. A potluck mixer follows the Wednesday night presentations. The potluck is a great opportunity to see neighbors and friends, make new friends, and meet authors during our usual groovy Guerneville winters. All programs are free and open to the public, although recommended for adults and older teens.
Be Prepared: Speaking of winter, are you ready for an emergency? The Russian River Fire Protection District has a groovy program called Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) that is trained to help if and when an emergency occurs. They are looking for people to join them! The goal of the program is to be prepared to help your family, neighbors and community, if and when the need occurs. It is the goal that each neighborhood would have trained members. For more information about the program, please contact Marilyn Fox at russianrivercert@gmail.com. They are hoping to start new classes right after the holiday season, so sign up groovy peeps!
JOY changes everythig at Safeway! I must wrap this column up now, but not before I mention one more groovy person... Have you noticed a change at your local Safeway? Well, there are LOTS of changes recently, thanks to the new Manager, Joy! She is a local gal, who lives right here in Guerneville! She made it possible for the $10 food bags collected during December (that normally go out of our area), all were donated to our local Food for Thought! This is the rst time in 26+ years this has happened! We also saw Safeway employees in the parade again, after a long time of being absent; all local fundraisers were donated to by Safeway; they gave to Give Back Tuesday, FOGS (Friends of Guerneville School), and turkeys and hams for the annual Christmas Dinner at the Vets Hall were provided... the giving of joy, from Joy, seems to be endless... for many years, Corporate Safeway backed away from community involvement, so we thank her for her support and the next time you are in Safeway, please let Joy know how groovy she is!
Well, looks like we have all survived the holidays. Hallelujah! Seems like Xmas whizzed by with the New Year right on its tail. Happy New Year!
A holiday party took place on December 10th at Casa Larry & Elena at La Sierra Vista with all the “Who’s Who” of Rio Nido and some well known folks from Guerneville. Guests in attendance were: Clare and Carla Harris, Shawn Pratt, Charlie Ortiz, Doug Misner, Beverly Bird, Nate and Ingrid Emming, Kerri Cardelli and Monty, Steve and Patty Bailey, Jennifer Murnin and Nathan, John Uniack and Troy and Linda Magness. A wonderful holiday celebration with a fun group of amazing people. Grateful is the word of the day to be surrounded by such good hearted and cherished friends. TILL NEXT TIME.
This years parade was a winter wonderland. We had some winners from Rio Nido. The “Roadhouse Dolls” won 1st place in the Novelty Category.

Rio Nido Pet of the Month
This is Harriet. She lives on Willow
Road. She is a four year old Tabby.
Harriet was adopted as a kitten from
the Sonoma County Animal Shelter.
She was probably born feral, she is a
bit crazy but is starting to settle into
the pleasures of domestication. She
enjoys sitting in front of the replace,
enjoys playing with her Yoda toy,
playing soccer with the foil ball from our local 5 & 10 store, digging in the yard and sitting on laps. Lets all give Harriet a big RN welcome.
