BODEGA cont’d from page 44
Seven different departments and about 35 individuals from West Sonoma County showed up in response to the call and helped fight the fire. Bodega Volunteer Fire Department was the first on scene and were unfortunately unable to save Bill Fink. It was a sad day for all, and especially tough for the firemen who knew him personally. Next came Bodega Bay and Gold Ridge Fire Protection Districts. Other Fire Departments that came out were Valley Ford, Occidental, Graton, and Monte Rio. They had multiple water tenders and fire engines and other vehicles including an ambulance.
The fire was contained to the house, which is a total loss and now uninhabitable. It was considered a defensive fire fight, meaning that it was fought from the exterior. They managed to protect other structures, vegetation and all the vehicles, many of which were Fink’s valuable Morgans.
Battalion Chief Darrin DeCarli of the Gold Ridge District says they had people on site until midday, spending many hours “mopping up,” putting out any hot spots.
In Memory of Javier Salmón 11/24/1955 - 2/15/2020
With a heavy heart, I share that Javier Salmón passed in UCSF the day after Valentine’s. They were attempting immunotherapy for his lymphoma that he was diagnosed with last year. He was a beloved community staple, with delightful Peruvian cheeses and music, most commonly encountered at the Sebastopol Farmers’ Market.
He outlived his parents Jaime and Christina, and is survived
by his daughter Jessica, 45, his wife Elodie and their children Camillo, 12, and Aliana, 8. He also left behind five siblings; oldest to youngest after Javier, there is Jaime, Rocio, Carlos, Pilar, and Daniel.
What a wonderful man, through and through, yet so
very humble. His glowing smile is always contagious and his emitted energy surrounds with positivity. I’m glad to have known him. I appreciate the time spent
as a child on his ranch in Bodega then again as an adult after he moved to Lakeport. Those memories are impossible to forget. Each moment in his presence was a cherished gift.
He was vital in Cuyuy Musica Andina. Cuyuy in the South American language, Quechua, means “to be transported through time and space,” through music in this case. To be transported straight to the Andes, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and other distant lands with a touch of Afro Cuban Rhythms. A perfectly unique recipe for dancing and happiness all around, right here in Sonoma County, CA.
“He lived life like there was no tomorrow, spreading joy, love, laughter, and music everywhere he went, expecting nothing in return,” shares
his eldest daughter. Jessica Salmón continues, “This remarkable man left an indelible impression on anyone who crossed his path. May his light continue to shine ever after...”
I distinctly remember being in his Farmer’s Market booth numerous times and whenever anyone asked him how he was doing, he would cheerfully reply, “(I’m) still alive, ...somehow!” I can still hear his voice replaying. I will always remember how he valued the present moment and embraced the day he was in. May his spirit live on.

Graton Fire
We respond for fires in clothes dryers... and February was no exception. They are caused by a buildup of lint underneath the drum or in the vent. Every year, more than 16,000 fires are sparked by dryers. That accounts
for almost 5% of all house fires! While the lint screen captures most of the lint, smaller particles pass through and build up on the bottom of the dryer... and the dryer duct vent. Most people don’t realize that the area underneath the drum
is open to the airflow and lint collects here even faster than it collects in the dryer duct. Over time, enough collects to catch fire due to the heating element... whether gas or electric. Check your owner’s manual about the best way to access this area and clean it out (make sure you unplug the dryer first). Also, make sure that the dryer duct vent is cleaned regularly – this will save money as clothes will dry faster.
