Through support from generous friends like you, Tim Ross can get back to doing what he loves most: being a husband and a dad.
March 1, 2024 Dear <Salutation>,
When Tim Ross was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2017, he wasn’t surprised.

That’s because his mother, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-aunts and great-uncles all had RUNX1 — a genetic defect that carries a high risk of leukemia. Each of those precious family members had gotten cancer and passed away far too early.
Results from a blood study in 2007 confirmed Tim’s fears: He also had the defect. So while Tim’s official AML diagnosis didn’t come as a shock, that didn’t make the reality any easier for him or his family.
“AML is considered to be the most aggressive form of leukemia. When I got the diagnosis, I figured that was it,” admits Tim. “I figured it was my time.”
Heartbroken, he began to make plans for his wife and children. “After I got the news, I called my wife,” Tim recalls. “She later told me she sat at her desk and thought to herself ‘I’m going to be a widow.’”
But Tim’s story doesn’t end there, <Salutation>.
Because of your past support, Tim had a place to go in City of Hope®. And because of your kindness, Tim had access to talented physicians like Matthew Mei, M.D., and their lifesaving, patient-centered treatments.
After three rounds of aggressive chemotherapy and an experimental bone marrow transplant, Tim entered remission. He became the only person to do so in his family’s history. “It worked, and Dr. Mei saved my life,” admits Tim. “I’m the first in my family with this defect to live.”
Today, Tim is back with his family. He gets to be a husband and a father again — something he’d prayed about for years.
