Testimonials, Reflections and Memories
a high-level ensemble like the Susquehanna Chorale. As a member of both the children’s and youth chorales, the Susquehanna Chorale played an incredibly important role in my musical education and development. I learned so many skills and gained so many wonderful relationships that carried me forward into a career in music. My time with the children’s and youth choirs taught me many things about being a good musician, but I think this is
also where I really learned to love singing. Singing as a combined choir at the Youth Choral festival was always a memorable highlight. But I can’t leave out my very first solo performance, singing the solo verse in How Can I Keep From Singing? during my time in the Children’s Chorale”
– Meredith (Mecum) Bloomfield, singer
• “Being a member of the Susquehanna Children’s Chorale is great! I love Ms. Shepler and have learned so much from her. She always makes our practices fun! I cannot wait to sing again with the Children’s Chorale this fall!” – Marabeth Duggan, singer
• “I have never thought about singing with an orchestra.
I have never before seen such a large group of people working together to make such beautiful and peaceful music. To be the center of attention, surrounded by instruments of all different shapes, sizes and sounds, was quite exhilarating. I had no idea it was going to be this breathtaking. The whole choir and orchestra, the maestro, and the people backstage all were so encouraging to me. They did not know what a huge impact they had on me. Maestro Malina told me this one thing that will stick with me forever: “We strive for perfection, but we will never achieve it. We leave that for a Higher Power.” I have grown in many areas as a result of being a part of these performances. I learned that the little things are the things that matter the most and that there is always room for improvement.” – Royce Shaver, EOP Singer, and soloist in Chichester Psalms with HSO
Board of Directors
• “I have always been impressed by the SC’s high standards and I believed that, following my years with the Symphony, I might be of some help to the Chorale as it celebrates its 40th anniversary and looks to the future.” – Jeff Woodruff, Susquehanna Chorale Honorary Board Member, and Former Executive Director of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra
encounter with the Divine. This is an absolute necessity for any clergyperson which the Chorale provided for me.”
– Richard Cassel, Former Susquehanna Chorale Board President
• “I have always felt that the arts will keep us sane when
the other stuff of living just drives us nuts. The Chorale’s music does that for me. The fact that there is a high quality educational program means so much.” – Maggie Beaty, Susquehanna Chorale Board Member and Chair of the Educational Outreach Program
1997 Tour (Great Britain-Scotland, England)
• “One of the most memorable events of my life was my participation with the Chorale of our tour of Scotland in 1997. Particularly memorable was the Chorale’s concert in the Hope Park Parish Church in St. Andrews and the Ceilidh which followed, hosted by Hope Park’s Minister, on June 29, 1997 – a day in my life and a foretaste of Heaven which I shall never forget.” – Richard Cassel, Former Susquehanna Chorale Board President
• “One of the most memorable events is our first international tour to Scotland and England. The first day we arrived
in Scotland, Linda and I were photographed sitting on a large stone at the edge of Loch Lomond, and a part of our repertoire was singing the “Bonnie, Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond.” – Mark Tedford, singer
• “I can still remember singing at Coventry Cathedral in the UK, singing Tom Schwalm’s arrangement of The Prayer
of St. Francis. We were singing from the “new” modern cathedral while looking out at the bombed ruins of the “old” cathedral from WWII. “Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.”
– Alan Hair, singer
2008 Tour (Switzerland, Austria, Bavaria)
• “One of my most memorable events while being a singer in the SC was singing in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.”
– Susanna Caroselli, Former Susquehanna Chorale Singer
• “My most memorable time was our joint tour of Europe during which I sang under Linda’s direction and vice versa. A really memorable time”. – Robert Upton, Susquehanna Chorale Singer and Conductor, Wheatland Choraler

“I had the sound of the Chorale in mind when I wrote Theta’s Musings. I always compose for a specific group. I find it to be more respectful if I know exactly the strengths of the group and particularly the sensitivity of the conductor.” - Robert Page, Composer, former Conductor of Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, Director of Choral Activities, Carnegie Mellon University and Temple University
