Project Name: 2020 Large Diameter Sewer Rehabilitation
Firm: GPD Group
Owner: Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority
Key Partners: Metco Consulting Engineers; Mott MacDonald; Monaloh Basin
Engineers, Inc.; Hatch Ltd.
The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority began proactively addressing its aging
infrastructure through its Large Diameter Sewer Rehabilitation (LDSR) program. GPD
Group was selected for the 2020 LDSR project, which included over 1,500 feet of 48-
inch, 60-inch, and 101-inch circular and oval brick sewers at three locations in the City
of Pittsburgh. GPD performed the inspection, evaluation and rehabilitation of the three
segments. The result of GPD’s evaluation of available trenchless rehabilitation technologies
resulted in the selection of a spray-applied Geopolymer Lining System (GLS), which had
not been used for large sewer rehabilitations in the Pittsburgh region. GLS provided a cost-
effective, structurally independent, corrosion-resistant new “pipe within a pipe.” Its small
construction footprint minimized impacts on the public, and key stakeholders such as
UPMC, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (East Busway), the Pittsburgh Zoo, and the Pittsburgh
Water and Sewer Authority Operations were able to maintain uninterrupted operations
during construction.
