(3) Sample tasks you can perform in Japanese by now.
1. Buy a ticket. Perform basic tasks on the airplane such as: find your seat on the airplane; ask for drinks and food; ask for the location of the bathroom; introduce yourself to your fellow passenger (if you feel like); ask for assistance of all kinds!
2. Find your host family at the airport. Introduce yourself. Comment on various interesting things at the airport and on the way home. Comment on the weather. Comment on the car.
3. At the dinner table, talk about your university, classes, teachers, etc. Talk about your family. Show some pictures.
4. Go around the neighborhood and ask for the directions. Buy stamps at the post office. Buy cookies at a bakery. Go to a supermarket and taste Japanese food. Go to a neighborhood vegetable shop and buy vegetables. Go to a neighborhood meat shop and buy meat. Go to a liquor shop and buy beer.
5. Go to a fast food restaurant alone. Order food. Go to a nicer restaurant with a Japanese friend. Order food. Comment on the food. Ask about the restaurant. Ask about new things. Talk about your major, DC, newspapers, books, computer software, etc., etc.
6. Order a pizza over the phone. Call up your new Japanese friend and go to a movie together. Explain where the movie theater is. Call up a bookstore and ask if they have English books. Ask where the store is located. Go to a local sushi shop and talk with the sushi chef over the counter.
7. Talk about your travel plan.
8. When you are traveling and find minor problems at an inn (for example, no towel; the air conditioner is not working; the bathroom is not clean), explain the situation to the front desk clerk and have the problems corrected.
9. Write a short diary entry.
10. Buy a new computer. Show it to your Japanese friends and explain to them how to use it. When leaving the country, sell it by advertising.
