7 Review of noun modification by sentence (=relative clause)
The first of the following pair of sentences provides background information:
I sent a letter a week ago. The letter came back today.
BACKGROUND FOREGROUND
This type of background information can be incorporated into a more complex sentence in the form of a noun modification by a sentence as shown below:
“The letter I sent a week ago came back today.”
The underlined part that is modifying the noun “letter” is called a relative clause. In English, the relative clause follows the noun it modifies, while in Japanese it precedes it.
一週間前に手紙を出しました。その手紙が今日もどって来ました。
→ 私が一週間前に出した(その)手紙が今日もどって来ました。
