Figure 2 the language maps produced in response to the Arab Spring tasking
the region, fuelling instability. The task was to produce language maps and reports of 26 countries in 2 weeks! This sizable task was achieved in just over four weeks by four staff, assisted significantly by the presence of an Arabic linguist in the team. Research reports, on the characteristics of the groups living in the area of interest, enhanced situational awareness of operations. A study of the Tuareg, their distribution, nomadic practices and affiliations with insurgent groups enhanced situational awareness on activities in Mali and the broader Sahel in North Africa.
The team provided mapping and analysis of ethnicity in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea to support the UK’s response to the Ebola crisis in 2014. Different tribal groups have specific burial practices
